Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned her family and she was fostered by her mother grandmother and godparents. In her childhood, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford's love for acting grew as a child. She joined the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she wasn't a good for the school. Ford rather than applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place after her third try she applied for and was awarded an admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford's first appearance on television was an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the moment she was done with school, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate was a regular performer on stage as well as a part of The Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season.
